This study investigated the role of bureaucracy in public service efficiency in Nigeria. Specifically, the study focused on the effects of impersonal rules on public service efficiency and the influence of standard operating procedures on it in Nigeria. Qualitative methods, as well as Secondary data, were utilized as sources for data collection and for the discussion of findings. Findings revealed that bureaucracy in Nigeria has been bedeviled by monumental corruption, despite the supposed, contrary to impersonal rules that should guide the actions and inactions of bureaucrats, and that standard operating procedures have not been given their due as necessary components of bureaucracy. The study concluded that if corruption must be nipped in the bud, impersonal rules must be considered a precursor to efficient services in the public sector ecosystem in Nigeria. The study recommended, amongst other things, that corruption among public bureaucrats should be properly checkmated through impersonal rules and conditionalities; that actions and inactions of the public bureaucrats should be adequately checkmated through standard operating procedures.
